Open Source does desktop publishing: Scribus
While there are plenty of free and open source templates to produce sharp looking documents available for our favorite two freebie word processors (Open Office and Google Docs), sometimes you need a little more capability to produce a professional looking handout or flyer. If you are thinking of self publishing a report or book, you’ll also find a good DTP package invaluable.
While there are very capable desktop publishing tolls on the market, Tightwads never pay large - especially when there’s an open source alternative that gets the job done. Scribus is easily as capable as the big commercial packages and it’s free for the taking.
While open source software is free for the taking, we recommend sending a small donation to the producers of of source projects open source tools that you find useful.
